From the first time a consumer learns about your business to the moment they become a paying customer, there are a huge number of variables that will affect their behavior, and whether they ever make it to the conversion point at all.
This process if referred to as the customer journey, and customer journey optimisation – CJO – makes use of strategies that boost engagement throughout the process, resulting in increased sales and boosted customer satisfaction.
Pearl Lemon Convert makes use of the latest data and analytics technologies and combines them with a wealth of marketing experience to offer customer journey optimization services that will take your business to the next level.

What is a Customer Journey?
The customer journey is the path a prospect takes from when they first land on your website to when they leave. Ideally a customer journey should end in a conversion of some kind.
What is Conversion Rate Optimisation?
In a nutshell, conversion rate optimisation – also often referred to as CRO – is a set of tactics and strategies that will increase the overall percentage of a website’s visitors who take the action that the webpage was designed to have them do, whether that is to directly purchase a product or service or simply complete a contact form.
How are Conversion Rates Calculated?
Calculating the conversion of a webpage is relatively simple. To do so you simply take the number of users who take the desired action and divide that by the number of people who visit the page.
What is A/B Testing?
Also sometimes called split testing A/B testing compares the effectiveness of two versions of a webpage. The differences can be as large – or as small – as the test calls for. Often A/B testing will involve singular changes that may seem small but can have a significant effect on conversion rates. These changes might include the colour and placement of call-to-action buttons, the images used in a header, the headlines introducing a paragraph of text and more.
What is Multivariate Testing?
Multivariate testing, is not, as some people mistakenly believe, just another way to describe A/B testing. A/B testing compares singular elements while, as its name suggests, multivariate testing compares the effectiveness of modifying multiple variables.
Which is Better, A/B Testing or Multivariate Testing?
Neither test type is inherently better than the other, but they are best used in certain situations, often depending on just how poorly your website is doing its job ie: converting visitors. If the site – or the page – is performing particularly poorly it’s often time to implement a multivariate test and consider a complete page, or even site redesign.
In many cases however this is ‘overkill’ and A/B testing is more effective. As it allows the tester to compare just one or two elements it is more precise and many people are surprised by just how much of a difference changing one seemingly simple element can be in terms of CRO.
How Much Traffic Does a Website Need for A/B Testing?
In terms of A/B testing it is not so much the amount of traffic that is most important but time and statistical significance. You can, in theory, run A/B tests on a site with very little traffic but it will take months to get any significant results from the testing.
This is why we usually advise that a site owner concentrate first on increasing traffic to their site before they undertake a wider CRO campaign. These traffic levels do not have to be huge however, just large enough that such a project makes logical and financial sense.
There are, however, many ways you can increase conversions on a lower traffic site that are not specifically tied to the type of analytical data an A/B test provides. There are however plenty of ways that you can increase conversions on a low traffic site that aren’t necessarily tied to analytical data.
How Do Heat Maps Help with CRO?
Heat maps are a great tool for visualizing, in an easy-to-understand way, just how users are moving through and utilizing your website. They are an excellent way to determine things like:
Which areas of a webpage are users most attracted to?
Which areas of a webpage are users ignoring?
Which placement of clickable elements are not working well for users?
Which areas on a webpage are users trying to click on but can’t?
How Long should an A/B Test be Run For?
Put very simply, until you have obtained a statistically significant response and gained insights that are actionable.
Does Live Chat on a Website Increase Conversions?
In many cases, yes. Multiple large studies have shown that live chat is an excellent way to boost customer trust and confidence in your brand and its offering, decrease consumer impatience and increase conversions.
Statistics show that:
90% of users consider a live chat option helpful
63% of users were more likely to return to a website that offered live chat
38% of users report making a purchase during a live chat session.
What Are the Biggest Challenges to Successfully Implementing CRO?
The biggest challenge of all is setting a workable, solid strategy. Without one any CRO efforts are never going to be as effective as they could be. As CRO is not always seen as a direct customer acquisition strategy it is often put on the back burner until conversion rates fall to such low levels that taking action becomes an emergency.
At this point CRO will be harder and more expensive to implement, so ideally businesses should not wait that long, and see CRO as a part of the customer acquisition process that will lead to increased ROI, which is, in fact, exactly what it is.
A lack of dedicated staff, and/or the budget to hire them is another challenge. This is one that can be solved by outsourcing CRO efforts to an outside party like the Pearl Lemon Convert Team.
How Much Does General Site Speed Affect Conversion Rates?
Site speed is often something only considered essential in terms of SEO, as the search engines place an increasingly heavy focus on it. However, it is a crucial part of the user experience and is probably even more important for CRO.
For CRO however, site speed does not simply refer to how many seconds it takes a web page to load. When examining the effect of site speed on your visitors you may also have to factor in the following:
- How long do product images take to load?
- How long does your checkout process take?
- How long does a user have to wait before they are attended to in live chat?
What is Considered a Good Conversion Rate?
That is a question that is hard to answer with a definitive number. That’s because there are so many types of conversion, with so many different expected outcomes. As a very general rule of thumb many experts will quote a conversion percentage of around 2.35% but that is rather inaccurate and very generalized.
Which is More Important, SEO or CRO?
SEO and CRO are different things, so cannot be compared directly. Search engine optimisation’s purpose is to drive as much traffic – and the more targeted the traffic the better – to your website. Conversion rate optimisation addresses the best ways to take that traffic and convert users into customers. Ideally you need both, and they should work together as seamlessly as possible.
